Week Four:)

This week I had my fourth week of Work Experience in a local vet. I was greeted by Laura who was on reception and went upstairs to hang my coat up. Myself and a girl from college were given a job of cleaning consult room 2 and a kennel in the isolation room. When we were finished cleaning, we went into the surgeries and watched Finbarr spade a cat and stitch up dogs wounds as he had been bitten by another dog. We then took two dogs on a walk to get a urine sample. After we brought the dogs back in we went to village to get lunch for one of the nurses. My day went very quickly this week and I really enjoyed it:)

Week Three :)

Today I had my third week of work experience in a veterinary centre. When I arrived I was greeted by Niamh who was on reception. I went up to the staff room and met a girl who is on work experience for college. Niamh came and gave us a list of things to do. We went to consult room one, and cleaned the weighing scales, windowsill, the table and the doors. We then went and cleaned the waiting room and the stairs. We went to the isolation room and cleaned up the bowels that were there. Niamh came to us and told us that we could make up the vaccine pouches. In the pouches we put a leafelet, a Beaufield Veternary Centre card and a magnet. I then swept the two consult rooms and the waiting area. I went to the kennel room and cleaned out a dogs kennel. I then washed the dishes from the animals lunch. I really enjoyed my third week of work experience :)

Week Two :)

Today I had my second week of work experience in a local veterinary centre. When I went in this morning I went straight into the kennel room to help one of the nurses. When I went in, she was feeding the animals. When they were finished eating I cleaned all of the dishes. After all of the dishes were cleaned, myself and another girl who is on work experience, were told we could go into the surgery room as they would be starting soon. This week I watched two cats being spaded. I enjoyed watching this as it is a common surgery that the vets must preform. I also watched a dog being neutered. This is also a procedure that is commonly preformed. I then went a cleaned out a kennel and prepared it for a cat. I enjoyed this as I had not done this before. I also rubbed a dog and kept him calm as he was being examined by the vet. My day went very quickly but I really enjoyed it and I can't wait for next week:).

Week One :)

This week I started my second placement of work experience in a local veterinary centre. I started my day feeling slightly nervous but very excited. I went in and was greeted by Laura, my supervisor, and she brought me up to the staff room where she told me a nurse would come and get me. Finnbar, the owner of the veterinary centre, came and shook my hand and told me what I would be doing. Finnbar left to prepare for a surgery, and a nurse came in with a girl from college who I would be working with. We went into the surgery room and watched Finnbar preform three surgeries of neutering two dogs and one cat. This was really interesting as Finnbar asked us many questions in relation to the work he was doing. Finnbar also told us very interesting information about cats that I was unaware of. This was very good as I found I remembered the information better as I had to figure it out. We then watched a fat tumour being removed from a dog. This was very interesting as I got to inject the dog with anestetic before its removal. We then watched Finnbar drain fluid from a dog. This was interesting as we found out the duration, you would keep the tube used to drain the fluid from the body. We then watched the nurses go about their usual days of preparing animals for more surgeries and giving ill animals their medicine. One of the nurses was doing a dental check on a dog and discovered that one of his teeth would need to be pulled out by Finnbar. We then watched Finnbar pulling out the tooth.
I really enjoyed my work experience and found it very interesting. All of the vets and the nurses were very friendly and I am really looking forward to my next of work experience :)
